Major Stakeholders of the APC in Oyo State have called for suspension of the state Congress.
SWIndependentnews.com.ng reports that all issues surrounding the emergence of new Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Oyo State chapter was laid to rest on Saturday as former Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Hon. Isaac Omodewu has emerged as State Chairman.
The Otu-born politician in Itesiwaju local government area of Oke-Ogun geo-political zone of the state emerged after delegates reached a consensus and affirmed his candidacy.
The congress was postponed twice over allegations of falsification of delegate lists by some groups in the party.
The two-term Commissioner appealed to APC members to put their grievances aside and unite to move the party to greater heights.
He urged members of the party to allow peace to reign and focus on how to win elections in the State come 2023.
He thanked the leaders of the party for their support, promising to do his best to reconcile aggrieved members and reposition the party.
According to him, “I am highly honoured to stand before great leaders and teeming members of APC as duly elected State Chairman APC Oyo State.
“Dear Delegates, I am humbled by the great honour you have conferred on me and the sacred trust you have bestowed on me; and with extreme humility, I accept this responsibility.
“On behalf of myself, and on behalf of my co-executives, who are surrounding me here right now. We have undertaken to lead this party to electoral victories in 2023 and beyond .
“Today’s state congress of our great party signals beginning of another chapter. I belong to no one, I belong to all members of our great party. My main tasks are to unite all tendencies within the party and to lead APC to victories in 2023 general elections and beyond
“This is a heavy responsibility. But I assure our teeming members, it is a responsibility we will not take very lightly. I pledge to do my utmost, God being on my side, to justify the faith and the confidence that APC members have imposed on me and all the new members of the state executives of our great party.
“I hail Hon. Gambo Lawan-led 7-man State Congress Committee for conducting a very transparent and peaceful state congress.
“We have shamed our critics, going by the peaceful conduct of today’s exercise. There is no winner, no vanquished as far as today’s exercise is concerned. I appeal to all the party stakeholders to maintain the love and interest of our great party within their hearts.
“Today’s exercise wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation of the Nigerian security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)”. Omodewu said.
Similarly, major stakeholders of the party in the state, led by Senator Seun Adeseun at Premier Hotel held a press conference called for suspension of its state Congress.
The conference which had in attendance, former guber-candidate of the party, Bayo Adelabu; House of Rep member, Tolu Akande-Sadipe; Minister for Sports, Sunday Dare; guber-aspirant, Mogaji Tegbe; Cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Adeduntan; NCC Chair, Prof. Adeolu Akande; former ALGON Chair, Abass Aleshinloye among other party chieftains condemned the high-handedness of a serving Senator and former Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala who surreptitiously cornered the party and pocketed its ward and local government delegates lists.
The chieftains called for a suspension of the congress following an alleged forgery of wards and delegates lists by the serving senator and a former governor of the State for their selfish reasons.
Calling for the suspension, Senator Adeseun decried the insensitive manner at which the culprits manipulated the delegates’ lists, despite what was sent to Abuja by the State Executives after the legitimate ward and local government congresses held in Oyo State.
He noted that top-ranking party officials said the call for suspension was in order, adding that the culprits behind the shenanigans do not have the true interest of the party at heart.
Senator Adeseun said the list sent from Abuja for the State congress was in complete variance from what was sent from the State, noting that there is a limit to what the party membership could condone.
He therefore appealed to the National leadership of the party to take up the matter seriously and if need be, limit the list of delegates from Oyo State to the statutory number, according to the party’s constitution.
He said, “We received information that the list sent in from Abuja had been tampered with by a serving senator and a former Governor of the State. In order to safeguard the integrity of the process, we appeal to our National Chairman to suspend the State congress until all of this is sorted out”.
“We appeal to our National Excos to suspend this process. Oyo is a sensitive state. The National congress could be attended by the statutory list of delegates from the State”, he said.
