9Janewshub.com.ng gathered that there was attacks and counter- attacks  by supporters of the Engineer Segun Oni of the Social  Democratic Party (SDP) and Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO) have allegedly left two persons dead while many sustained various degrees of injuries.

Though, there have been conflicting accounts of what actually led to the fracas with members of the rival political parties claiming that the deceased and those wounded were from their camps.

It was learnt the two rival parties were holding rallies at separate locations in Ekiti North Senatorial District.

Interestingly, both Segun Oni and governor Kayode Fayemi as well as the Director General of the APC candidate, Cyril Fasuyi are from Ekiti North.

It was learnt that trouble started when the campaign trail of the SDP got to Itaji-Ekiti to meet with the traditional ruler that supporters of the two political embroiled in fight.

At the end of the ensuing melee, one Tope Ajayi was reportedly shot and died in  the in the process.

Rt Hon Taiwo Olatunbosun ,the Director, Media and Publicity, BAO Campaign Organisation said the deceased was a member of the APC.

He also alleged that unspecified number of APC members are presently hospitalized where medical personnel are battling to save their lives.

According to him ,One of the victims, Joshua John, who is presently at a critical condition at the State University Teaching Hospital, said he was tortured and shot in the leg in the presence of SDP candidate, Chief Segun Oni and Hon. Daramola.

Refuting the allegation, Daramola explained that himself and Oni were inside the  Palace when some  hoodlums surged towards them.

The lawmaker said the political thugs who were armed to tn teeth came with the intention to attack and disrupt what he termed a successful outing of the SDP.

Daramola said he and Oni would be attacked right inside the palace for the quick intervention of security operatives.

However , Oyebanji Campaign warned Oni and his supporters against further attacks on APC members saying the warning to SDP and its candidate became imperative against the background of similar murderous conduct in the past when Oni allegedly deployed thugs to attack opposition members in his alleged desperate bid to win governorship rerun poll in 2009.

The APC said its campaign procession in Ekiti North senatorial district was peaceful earlier in the day until it was disrupted by SDP thugs under the command of Daramola at Itaji-Ekiti which was carried out in broad daylight.

It was also reported that the attack on the deceased was carried out by violent thugs who arrived in one Toyota Hilux and Tacoma vehicle, and were seen taking instructions from Daramola who was present at the scene of the crime.

The APC claimed that the SDP thugs shot at many vehicles in its campaign procession including the one belonging to the Special Adviser on Roads, Hon. Sunday Adunmo also known as Galaxy during the what it described as an “unprovoked attack.”

The Director of Media and Publicity of the Biodun Oyebanji Campaign Organisation, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, said “It is very disturbing that Daramola was seen by eyewitnesses personally leading thugs parading as security officials, and instructed them to shoot directly at our members in Itaji-Ekiti. He and others culpable of the breach of peace are to be held accountable.” Daramola, reported to have a predilection for violence and inciting statements, was until recently a member of the APC before decamping to the SDP.

Olatunbosun explained that the activities of the Biodun Oyebanji Campaign Organisation had been rancour-free and devoid of any violence since it began.

“It is tragic that within one week of Daramola decamping to the SDP, we have recorded a spate of violence including an attack on our campaign rally at Oke Ayedun on Friday, and now the brutal killing of our member today, and the maiming of many others who are now battling for their lives in the hospital.”

Countering the position canvassed by the ruling APC, the Director of Media and Publicity, Segun Oni Campaign Organisation, Jackson Adebayo, said the APC should be held liable for the alleged heinous crime.

Adebayo said: “We were at the palace at Itaji Ekiti where Asiwaju Segun Oni was meeting with obas in the local government area. some people were outside the palace, suddenly we saw about five buses loaded with transporters who are being used as political thugs associated with Governor Fayemi and the APC.

“They started shooting sporadically. we initially thought they were shooting to scare us away, people were running helter skelter without knowing that they really targeted our members to kill.

“They were also trying to force their way to where Engineer segun oni was may be in an attempt to assassinate him. That was when they were repelled by security agencies who came to the rescue and repelled them.

“But unfortunately, one of the thugs missed their vehicle because he fell down. We interrogated him and he said they were agents of APC. They left, we learnt one of them died later, but I would not know how”.

Speaking on the killing, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Sunday Abutu, said: there was a clash at Itaji-Ekiti between opposition parties members and that  investigation to unravel what transpired and the number of casualties as well as the possible arrest of culprits have commenced.

Abutu said the police, had however, quelled the bedlam and restored normalcy to the beleaguered town.

“But on  the killing of a person, we are yet to get that confirmation. As soon as that is done, I will update the press”, he stated.
